Frequently asked questions

SQUARREL supports individuals, cross-border workers, self-employed professionals, company directors and small businesses with their tax and accounting matters in Luxembourg.

The answers below explain how the firm generally works.

As every situation is different, the scope of the engagement is defined after an initial conversation.

What services does SQUARREL offer?

SQUARREL assists individuals, self-employed people and small companies with their accounting and tax obligations in Luxembourg.

The firm can help in particular with:

  • tax returns and their schedules;
  • property income, investments and foreign income;
  • tax advice and simulations;
  • bookkeeping, annual accounts and VAT;
  • starting a business and incorporating a company.

The engagement can be one-off or ongoing. Its scope and the fees are agreed before any work begins.

How do I get a fee proposal?

Describe your situation using the “Describe your needs” form or by email to h.peschon@squarrel.eu.

For a tax return, state the year concerned, your country of residence, your family situation and your main categories of income.

For an accounting engagement, specify your activity, the legal form, the approximate volume of documents and the state of your accounts.

Please also mention any deadline or request from the authorities. If necessary, the firm will ask you for further details before confirming the scope and the fees.

How are fees determined?

Fees can be set as a fixed fee or according to the time spent. They depend in particular on:

  • the nature and complexity of the file;
  • the income or transactions to be reviewed;
  • the schedules required;
  • the quality and organisation of the documents available.

The amount or the basis of calculation, as well as the services included, are specified before any work begins.

Any additional work is subject to prior agreement.

Can I hand over my file without coming in person?

Yes. Your file can generally be handled remotely, with exchanges by email, telephone or video call.

The firm will tell you how to send your documents and about any identification, signature or mandate formalities.

You can also request a meeting in Niederfeulen. Visits to the firm are by confirmed appointment only.

Who handles my file, and in which languages?

Your file is handled directly by Hadrien Peschon, chartered accountant in Luxembourg, who also teaches accounting and taxation in higher education.

You have a single, named contact for preparing the work, requests for documents and explanations of the treatments adopted.

Communication and services are offered in French or English.

Can I ask for one-off advice only?

Yes. SQUARREL can provide a targeted consultation, a technical review or a second opinion on a tax or accounting matter.

The question must be sufficiently well defined and come with the information needed to analyse it.

Can meetings take place remotely?

Yes. Consultations can be held:

  • at the firm’s office in Niederfeulen;
  • by video call;
  • by telephone, where the nature of the request allows.

Meetings are by appointment only.

Do you handle simple tax returns as well as complex cases?

Yes. The firm assists employees, pensioners, self-employed people and other taxpayers, whether resident or non-resident, with their Luxembourg tax return.

It handles straightforward situations as well as files involving:

  • several sources of income;
  • property;
  • investments or capital gains;
  • foreign income;
  • a particular family situation.

The engagement includes preparing Form 100 and the required schedules, within the agreed scope.

How do we start working together?

Briefly describe your situation using the contact form, specifying:

  • the service you are looking for;
  • your country of residence;
  • the nature of your income or business;
  • the main deadlines to be met;
  • any particular features of your situation.

An initial discussion will then establish the information needed, the scope of the engagement and the next steps.

What sets SQUARREL apart?

Files are handled directly by Hadrien Peschon, chartered accountant in Luxembourg, with no layers of intermediaries.

His approach combines:

  • a specialisation in Luxembourg personal taxation;
  • knowledge of Belgian–Luxembourg tax situations;
  • professional practice in tax and accounting;
  • teaching in higher education and professional training;
  • clear explanations of the treatment adopted;
  • scope and fees agreed in advance.

The aim is not to apply a standard answer, but to identify the treatment suited to the facts, the documents available and the applicable rules.

Which documents do I need to send?

The documents required vary depending on the engagement.

For a tax return, they may include salary or pension certificates, insurance statements, loan interest statements, information on property, foreign income and other expenses that may be taken into account.

A list tailored to your situation will be sent to you after the initial discussion.

How are fees determined?

Fees may be set as a fixed amount or based on the time spent, depending on the nature and complexity of the engagement.

The scope of the work and the fee arrangements are set out before work begins. Any additional service is subject to prior agreement.

Do I need to book an appointment before sending my request?

No. You can describe your needs in writing, without choosing a time slot, from the “Describe your needs” page.

The firm will reply by e-mail to specify the documents required, the scope of the work and the fees. A meeting is only offered where it is useful: it is not necessary for every tax return or question.

Is filing the tax return included in the engagement?

How the return will be filed is agreed with you before work begins.

Where the engagement provides for it, the return is first presented to you for approval, then filed as agreed.

Are tax deductions reviewed?

Yes. Preparing the tax return includes reviewing the deductions applicable to your personal situation, based on the information and supporting documents you provide.

Any points that require more in-depth analysis are flagged to you before they are dealt with.

What does the quote include, and which services may be additional?

The quote sets out the scope of the engagement, the documents required and the fees. A tax return includes the analysis needed to prepare it, within the agreed scope.

The level of work depends in particular on the nature of the file:

  • a simple or standard return;
  • a cross-border file;
  • a complex file involving, for example, property, investments, capital gains or particular forms of remuneration.

An in-depth study, several simulations, a written memo or work relating to an earlier year may be separate services. Any additional service is subject to prior agreement.

Can my file be handled entirely remotely?

Yes. Discussions can take place by e-mail, by telephone or by video call, without visiting the firm’s office.

Documents are sent by the means indicated by the firm. Please do not attach any tax or bank documents to your first request.

Do you deal with rental income from property abroad?

Yes. Income from property located in Luxembourg or abroad is examined for the Luxembourg tax return, with the schedules required by the file and the information needed to calculate depreciation.

The scope is defined according to the countries concerned: preparing a Luxembourg tax return does not automatically include preparing a foreign one.
